Martha Jean Laberge, 69, a Brunswick native who lived most recently in Chesapeake, Va., died unexpectedly at her home on Oct. 12, 2014.

She was born Nov. 8, 1944, in Brunswick, Maine, the daughter of Donald and Jeannette (Ouellette) Hunt. The loss of her parents when she was a young child formed the foundation of a deeply religious faith that sustained Jean throughout her life.

After her parents’ deaths, Jean was raised by relatives in the Hunt and Leonard families. She graduated from Brunswick High School in 1962 and attended Colby College in Waterville. She married her soul mate, Robert A. “Yogi” Laberge, in 1965. She spent the next 25 years as a homemaker, raising their two sons and maintaining the family home on Hennessey Avenue. She also enjoyed helping neighbors and friends in need selflessly and generously.

Jean lived for a time in London, England, while her husband worked for the U.S. Navy. She cherished those final few years with her “best friend.” She moved to Virginia shortly after he passed away in 1994.

Jean is survived by her two sons: Michael R. Laberge, his wife, Dulcey, and their daughter, Anna, of Readfield, Maine; and Jason A. Laberge, his wife, Maggie, and their three daughters Alana, Havah and Sheva, of Ithaca, N.Y. She also leaves many relatives and good friends in Maine and Virginia about whom she spoke warmly.

A service will be held on Oct. 17 at H.D. Oliver Funeral Home in Chesapeake, Va. In lieu of flowers, Jean would want those who cared about her to help a neighbor in need or to make a donation to their favorite charity.

A committal service in Brunswick, Maine, will be announced at a later date. An announcement will be made closer to the event.
