Nor’easters hold on for win over Gordon in field hockey

Beth Sullivan, Nicole Matarozzo and Vonde Saunders scored first-half goals and the University of New England held on for a 3-2 win over Gordon in a Commonwealth Coast Conference field hockey game at Biddeford.

Two goals in the final 15 minutes weren’t enough for the Scots (8-7, 5-3) to get by the Nor’easters (9-5, 7-1).

 Jillian Conway and Sydney Cowles scored, Cristina Vega made two stops for her first shutout of the season, and Bates (3-8) posted a 2-0 victory over Babson (8-7) at Babson Park, Massachusetts.

WOMEN’S SOCCER: Libby Malasky and Caroline Andy scored in the final 1:35 of the first half to spark Bates (7-5) in a 3-1 win over Husson (8-5) at Bangor.

Husson’s Leah Hibbard and Bates’ Julia Rosen scored 45 seconds apart about 15 minutes into second half.

SOCCER

WOMEN’S WORLD CUP: Abby Wambach scored in the 55th minute to help the United States beat Trinidad and Tobago 1-0 in their opening qualifying game.

Wambach scored her 169th international goal on a header off Alex Morgan’s cross.

MLS: Commissioner Don Garber criticized U.S. Coach Jurgen Klinsmann for not selecting Landon Donovan for his World Cup roster and for saying Clint Dempsey and Michael Bradley hurt their careers by returning to the league, calling Klinsmann’s remarks “incredibly damaging to our league” and “personally infuriating.”

HALL OF FAME: Laura Davies, regarded as Britain’s greatest female golfer, was selected for the World Golf Hall of Fame.

Also chosen for induction were Mark O’Meara, David Graham of Australia and architect A.W. Tillinghast.

PGA: U.S. Open winner Martin Kaymer won the PGA Grand Slam of Golf in a playoff over Masters champion Bubba Watson at Southampton, Bermuda.

Kaymer birdied the extra hole to finish a back-and-forth final round of the 36-hole exhibition for the year’s major champions.

TENNIS

KREMLIN CUP: U.S. Open champ Marin Cilic reached the quarterfinals, grinding out a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Russia’s Evgeny Donskoy at Moscow.

 In the women’s draw, second-seeded Ekaterina Makarova exited in the second round, losing 6-4, 6-4 to Romania’s Irina-Camelia Begu.

Third-seeded Flavia Pennetta also fell, losing 7-6 (4), 6-4 to fellow Italian Camila Giorgi.

ERSTE BANK OPEN: Philipp Kohlschreiber made a winning return from a four-week injury layoff, rallying past Carlos Berlocq of Argentina 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 in the second round at Vienna.

LUXEMBOURG OPEN: Second-seeded Alize Cornet of France and third-seeded Sabine Lisicki of Germany bowed out in the second round, following top seed Andrea Petkovic of Germany, who lost on Tuesday.

HORSE RACING

JOCKEY DEATH: Juan Saez, a 17-year-old apprentice jockey, has died from injuries sustained Tuesday in a riding accident at an Indiana racetrack.

NBA: Los Angeles Lakers guard Steve Nash missed his third straight practice after injuring his back while carrying bags.

PREP SCHOOLS

FIELD HOCKEY: Tatiana Bradley scored twice, Julia Mini and Kailey Sonricker added goals, and Berwick Academy (6-2-1) beat Lexington Christian Academy 4-0 at Lexington, Massachusetts.
