SACO/BIDDEFORD — “Saco Bay Footbridge,” “Unity Bridge,” “Millworkers Memorial” ”“ these are a few of the suggestions from area residents for the name of the pedestrian bridge that now spans the Saco River, connecting mill campuses on both sides.
The Biddeford+Saco Chamber of Commerce & Industry, under the direction of the two mayors’ offices, is asking for suggestions to name the new pedestrian bridge. Those who wish to weigh in can go to the chamber’s Facebook page.
Chamber Executive Director Craig Pendleton said officials are leaning toward a name with broad appeal that’s “historical or futuristic.”
Pendleton said officials want to get the community’s input, and the bridge is symbolic of the connection of the two cities.
The pedestrian bridge was lifted by crane and put into place in September, and officials said at the time, the bridge would be open around mid-November, after additional site work was completed.
The majority of the $595,000 project, 80 percent, was paid for by the Maine Department of Transportation. Each of the cities paid 10 percent of the cost.
