Next month’s election will determine the direction that our state will take during the next few years.

Will we return to shortfall budgeting in which our government borrows from the next fiscal year in order to balance the budget, or will we have practical management in which government spends wisely within its revenues?

Will we select legislators who will once again jack up the taxes thus dampening the economy, or will the private sector be encouraged to grow, innovate and provide opportunities for our young and all others alike?

It seems that very few people understand that reducing the tax burden actually increases tax revenues.

And will we expect our government to spend our hard-earned tax dollars helping the disabled, our children in need and those who need a hand-up instead of squandering our money on able-bodied, capable people who would rather collect welfare than work?

It seems to me that we should be supporting those candidates who will work for a smaller, leaner and more efficient state government that does not just throw money at problems, but instead spends carefully and wisely, encouraging the private sector to expand and thus create jobs and opportunities.

I have two candidates, both from Gray, who personify the type of legislator that is needed for the future of Maine and would thus represent Gray and Maine citizens very well.

For a number of years now, I have known Sue Austin, both as a friend and as a legislator. Her quiet personality belies a thoughtful and “common sense” approach to law-making which is appropriate to our needs, and her experience as a legislator would be very valuable indeed within the House of Representatives.

To the State Senate, Cathy Manchester would bring valuable experience earned in both the public and private sectors. As a small business owner/operator, Cathy understands what is needed to stimulate the economy, and as a former police chief, she has had experience in administering local budgets and ordinances.

I will be voting on Nov. 4, and I hope you, my dear reader, will do the same.
