OLD ORCHARD BEACH — Old Orchard Beach shot out to a 34-0 halftime lead on the way to a comprehensive 41-14 victory over Boothbay Region in a Western Class D football game on Friday night at Joe Regina Field.

With the win Old Orchard (4-3) finishes fourth in the Western Class D rankings, and will host fifth-seed Winthrop/Monmouth (3-4) in a quarterfinal next Friday night. OOB beat W/M 27-8 on Sept. 12.

Quarterback Bryan Roberts ran for 132 yards and three touchdowns on 17 carries Friday, scoring on runs of 40 and 3 yards in the opening quarter to give OOB a 12-0 lead after one.

Roberts also threw for 59 yards on 3 of 6 passing, finding tight end Joe Anderson on a 12-yard pass play for a TD early in the second, with the two also hooking up on the 2-point conversion to make it 20-0.

Roberts soon after ran for his third TD of the night, this one from 1-yard out, and found Andrew Graves (seven carries, 78 yards) on the 2-point conversion. Zach Demers then put the icing on the cake on the final play of the first half, getting a strip sack, recovering the fumble and rumbling 15 yards into the end zone to make it 34-0 as the OOB defense allowed Boothbay (2-5) just 12 yards of total offense in the opening half.

Erik Hogan added a 9-yard TD run in the third quarter for the Seagulls.

Wells 55, Lake Region 14

NAPLES — Wells broke open a 7-7 game at halftime to run away from Lake Region in a Western Class C football game on Friday night.

Chris Carney ran for two touchdowns and caught another for the Warriors, who also got rushing touchdowns from Mike Curtis and Reid Chase and a fumble return for a score by DeAndre Woods.

The victory over the Lakers (2-6) means Wells finishes 6-2 on the season and will have to wait for tomorrow night’s Leavitt at Spruce Mountain game. A win by top-ranked Spruce (7-0) would send Wells into the two seed, while a Leavitt (6-1) win would mean Wells would finish in the No. 3 spot.

Boys Soccer

Thornton Academy 2, Bonny Eagle 0

SACO — Simon Trcka scored a pair of second-half goals as fifth-seeded Thornton Academy earned the first playoff win in program history with a 2-0 victory over 12th-seeded Bonny Eagle in a Western Class A preliminary round boys soccer game on Friday at Hill Stadium.

Trcka’s first goal was assisted by Alex Arnold, with his second coming off a pass from Tyler LeBel. Thornton (9-3-3) goalie made one stop for the shutout, whil Bonny Eagle (4-8-3) keeper Zack Moody made 12 stops to keep his team in the game.

The Golden Trojans will take on fourth-seed Deering (12-1-1) in a quarterfinal on Wednesday at Memorial Stadium in Portland. The Rams topped the Trojans 2-1 in double overtime during the regular season.
