A worthy task to ask yourself when you vote is who is going to represent the best values of what a civil society should provide. The public welfare and education system cost more each year without an end. We have a declining school population and yet it is not enough. We have the highest energy costs and we subsidize wind power for export to Mass. There is a group of legislators who did all of this and now they want to provide taxpayer money to illegal’s while providing never ending general assistance benefits to enable some citizens for a life of dependency. The Maine Department of Education in 2009 wanted free grant money from the U.S. Department of Education. Now we have this new set of core standards. They made changes to the 1974 Family Education and Privacy Act without parental consent. A testing system conceived from the Fabian’s that produces a social engineered student. We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
