WELLS — On Monday at around 2 p.m., Wells Police received reports of a suspicious male walking near Wells High School, carrying something wrapped in a blanket.
“Witnesses who saw this male automatically assumed the worst because of recent headlines throughout the country,” Wells Police said in a statement.
Police searched the area near the high school and Wells Junior High School.
After investigating, police learned that a WHS student found a parade rifle used by the school colorguard, which he wrapped in a black sweatshirt and planned to return it to the school. He was heading in toward the school to meet his father for a ride home, according to police.
No charges will be filed, as no crime was committed, police said.
“In hindsight,” said Wells Police, “the youth should have handled the situation differently, so what started out as an attempt to do good wouldn’t have been mistaken and caused panic.”

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
