The 126th Maine Legislature, elected in 2012, was able to block many bad bills and override vetoes of many good bills because Democrats held a majority in both the Senate and the House. This fall, the balance of power in the Legislature is once again at stake.
Given that Democrats only hold a four-seat margin over Republicans in the Senate, the Maine GOP and its big-moneyed corporate allies have focused their efforts and financial resources on turning over Senate seats. In Maine Senate District 24, Democrat Stan Gerzofsky’s seat is at risk because he faces not one but two opponents — a Republican and a Green.
Therefore, I write to urge my fellow progressive voters not to split their votes on Election Day. In casting ballots for the Green, they risk sending a Republican to Augusta and shifting the balance of power to the GOP.
With the race for the Blaine House still too close to call, the voters of Brunswick, Freeport, Harpswell, North Yarmouth and Yarmouth owe it to themselves to be sure their state senator is a Democrat. Please join me in voting for Stan.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
