Local cross country teams weren’t able to grab the top spot at Saturday’s regional championship meet at Twin Brook Recreation Center in Cumberland, but they did suggest that the biggest prize of all, a state championship, might just be in the cards this coming Saturday in Belfast.

In the Class A boys’ meet, Scarborough finished just three points behind Falmouth for second place and will get another shot at the Yachtsmen this weekend. South Portland was 12th and did not qualify for states.

On the girls’ side, the Red Storm were runners-up as well, to Massabesic, while the Red Riots also qualified thanks to a fifth-place showing.

In Class B, Cape Elizabeth’s boys finished third behind York and Greely, while the girls were third behind Yarmouth and Greely. Both Capers teams qualified for states.

Class A

Scarborough’s boys’ team placed three runners in the top 10, but ultimately the Red Storm’s 52 points weren’t quite enough to beat Falmouth (49). Jacob Terry led the way with a runner-up individual showing, completing the 5,000-meter course in 16 minutes, 47.94 seconds. Colin Tardiff was sixth in 17:03.56 and Connor Doherty placed ninth in 17:23.89. Also scoring were Andrew Sholl (14th, 17:30.68) and Jacob Bloom (21st, 17:59.30).

South Portland had 341 points and failed to qualify for states for the first time since 2008. The Red Riots were paced by Gavin Damian-Loring, who was 19th in 17:55.05. Also scoring were Christopher Mitchell (35th, 18:40.54), Steven Smith (88th, 20:23.83), Zachary Dyer (96th, 21:08.09) and Xander Keiter (103rd, 21:30.61).

In the girls’ meet, Massabesic was tops with 70 points and Scarborough came in second with 81. The Red Storm had four of the top 10, as Bethany Sholl placed sixth (20:57.53), Samantha Saraceno came in seventh (21:02.83), Marisa Carbone finished ninth (21:10.21) and Laura Volan was 10th (21:16.43). Morgan McKeown (49th, 23:17.13) was the other scorer.

South Portland finished with 143 points and boasted the fourth-place finisher in Casey Loring (20:32.81). Also scoring were Serena McKenzie (15th, 21:22.02), Delphi Bourassa (28th, 22:12.21), Janey Blackwell-Orr (35th, 22:37.18) and Phoebe Letourneau (61st, 23:57.06).

Class B

Cape Elizabeth’s boys tallied 105 points, but that left the Capers behind York (72) and Greely (92). The Capers did boast the top individual in Mitch Morris (16:45.48). Kyle Kennedy was sixth (17:36.65). Also scoring were Mac Huffard (24th, 18:28.63), Jared Duperre (29th, 18:38.07) and Arsen Scheindel (45th, 19:24.87).

On the girls’ side, Cape Elizabeth wound up with 54 points, but Yarmouth had 39 and Greely finished with 45. The Capers, however, were the only team with all five finishers placing in the top 15. Leading the way were top 10 runners Liv Palma (seventh, 20:38.90) and Rhoen Fiutak (eighth, 20:43.14). Also scoring were Midori Kwan (11th, 21:02.54), Sam Feenstra (13th, 21:20.21) and Emma Shedd (15th, 21:23.51).

States

The state meet Saturday features the Scarborough boys going for their seventh title in 11 years (and their first since 2001) at 12:30 p.m. The Scarborough and South Portland girls run at 1:15 p.m. The Red Storm are taking place in their first state meet since 2010 and seek their first championship since 2008. The Red Riots were sixth each of the past two years and are running at states for the sixth year in a row.

The Class B boys’ meet starts at 2 p.m. Cape Elizabeth is eyeing a third consecutive title, but it won’t come easily. The Class B girls’ championship ends the day at 2:45 p.m., as Cape Elizabeth seeks its first title since 2009.

The cross country season then culminates with the New England championships Saturday, Nov. 8 in Manchester, Connecticut.
