DURHAM – Young people learning about public service will honor adults who know all about it on Monday, Nov. 10, at the Durham Congregational Church.

Boy Scout Troop 145 is inviting all veterans and active-duty military members, and one guest, to a free spaghetti dinner from 5-6:30 p.m., in observance of Veterans Day. This is the first year that Troop 145 is putting on the dinner for the military.

“It’s to thank them for their service to the country,” said Larry Wagoner, Troop 145 Scout master. “I mentioned it to the boys in late September, and they were very enthusiastic about it.”

Wagoner, a Congregational Church member, said that the church council approved the event. Wagoner, assistant Scoutmaster Tom Page and all 10 Troop 145 Scouts will help out at the dinner. They will divide into two shifts, Wagoner said. Troop families donated all the food.

“We want them to thank the veterans for all their hard work and service for our country, and the Scouts really appreciate it,” he said. “It’s good for the Scouts to do that for the community. That’s what the Scouts are all about.”

Justen Levesque, senior patrol leader for the troop, not only will work the dinner, but will welcome his parents. Levesque’s stepfather, John Wagner, spent 26 years in the Navy, and Levesque’s mother, Collette Wagner, will attend, as well.

“It’s an honor for our troops to put on this dinner,” Levesque said. “It’s to thank all the veterans, how they sacrificed for us.”

Levesque, 17, is a senior at Freeport High School. As patrol leader, he helps the scoutmaster and takes charge when Wagoner cannot be at functions.

“I try to keep them focused,” said Levesque, who is planning to pursue a business career.
