BATH — After a neck-and-neck election, longtime District Attorney Geoffrey Rushlau emerged the apparent winner of another four-year term.

With 74 of 77 precincts reporting in as of Thursday morning, according to unofficial results tabulated by the Bangor Daily News, the Dresden Republican defeated Democrat David Sinclair of Bath, 33,352 to 32,773.

Bowdoin was among the towns not reporting, but Town Clerk Melanie Page Thursday said Rushlau had a strong lead there.

Rushlau – who has been district attorney for 21 years – and Sinclair vied for the Prosecutorial District 6 post, which includes Sagadahoc, Lincoln, Knox and Waldo counties. Sinclair stepped down from the Bath City Council after two terms to run for DA.

At one point, with 64 out of 77 precincts reporting by 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sinclair was leading by five votes – 28,808 to 28,803 – according to the BDN.

Sinclair defeated Rushlau in Bath, 2,322 to 1,363, and in Topsham, 2,346 to 2,145.

Rushlau was appointed district attorney in 1993 by then-Gov. John McKernan, and has been re-elected ever since.

He has been a prosecutor for 34 years, including time as an assistant district attorney in Androscoggin and Sagadahoc counties from 1980-1993.

After 16 years running a software development company and serving as a computer consultant, Sinclair went to law school, graduated in 2010, and now has a private law practice in Bath.

Having served on the City Council since 2008, including a year as chairman, Sinclair has also been on the boards of the Bath Area Food Bank and Two Bridges Regional Jail Authority, and has done work with the Greater Bath Homelessness Initiative.
