LYMAN — The charter commission will appoint a ninth member, as one resident elected through a write-in ballot has declined the position.

On Tuesday, residents voted 1,262 to 520 to establish a charter commission for the purpose of making revisions to the municipal charter, which would go before the voters.

The charter commission is a nine-member committee, ordinarily comprised of three appointed members and six elected members.

Residents were asked Tuesday to vote for six charter commission members, though there were only three people running. Those three ”“ Shirley Harrison, Donald Hernon and Lee Schatz ”“ were elected.

Ballots were reviewed, and the three top write-in candidates were Dan Brown with 19 votes, Marie Nikel with 15 votes and Maurice St. Clair with 10 votes.

Town Clerk Pauline Weiss said St. Clair has declined the position.

The next highest number of votes is a tie between William Single Sr. and Leo Ruel, who both received eight write-in votes.

Weiss said she has spoken with the Maine Municipal Association, and a new member to fill the vacancy can be appointed by the eight members on the board, and does not need to be elected.
