A 3-year-old girl and 1-year-old boy who had been missing since Thursday have been found, Rumford police said Sunday.

Sgt. Douglas Maifeld said that Kylee Morin, 3, and her brother, Shawn Konopka, 1, were returned by their mother to the custody of the state this weekend.

Kylee was returned by her mother, Elsa Konopka, to her former foster family in Lewiston on Saturday night. Maifeld said the family was unaware that the child had been reported missing until they learned about the matter through the news media. Kylee was eventually turned over to the custody of the Maine Department of Health and Human Services.

Shawn Konopka was taken by his mother to the Lewiston foster family on Sunday. The DHHS considers the case closed.

Neither child was harmed.

Maifeld said he will meet with the Oxford County District Attorney’s Office on Monday to review whether Elsa Konopka should be charged with criminal restraint by a parent.

Maifeld said Rumford police are still not sure why Konopka took off with her children.
