As an avid fan of the Portland Pirates, the Portland Sea Dogs, and, especially, the Boston Red Sox, Nick could tell you statistics that few people even knew. He travelled extensively and was in Australia when the Red Sox won the World Series in 2004. He said it was one of the highlights of his trip when he was told of the victory!
He enjoyed family gettogethers with his brother, four sisters and their families. Nick’s younger sisters benefitted from an older brother who could burp the alphabet (which is still done at very private family parties), and teach swear words. With his vivid imagination, he created a cartoon series called, “Percy Walker,” about a detective/mobster and his wife, Rita.
He served with the U.S. Army in Korea from 1966- 1968, returning home to work in the family business, Yarmouth Hardware Company, for several years. After leaving Yarmouth, Nick went to work at Hanscom Air Force Base as a supply clerk, retiring in 2000. After retirement, Nick moved to Brunswick, where he was active in the People Plus program and, especially as a member of the congregation at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Brunswick. Painting classes and mission work were Nick’s main interests for many years.
Nick was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother Albion. He is survived by four sisters: Helen Payson Seager (Brad), Hingham, MA; Penelope (Penny) Simkin (Peter), Seattle, WA; Caroline (Kinnin) Payson, York Harbor; and Barbara (Bibby) Tellefsen (Robert), Gray; sister-in-law Susan D. Payson, Portland; 14 nieces and nephews and 27 greatnieces and great-nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Dec. 8, 2014, at the Kingdom Hall, Jehovah’s Witnesses, 22 Water St., Brunswick, at 2 p.m. Please visit www.lindquistfuneralhome.com to share condolences, memories and tributes with his family.
