PORTLAND (AP) — The Nova Star ferry that just finished its inaugural season will stay in Shelburne, Nova Scotia, for the time being.
Operators of the ferry previously said they had intended to send the cruise ferry south to Florida while its owners negotiated a winter route to bring in revenue during the offseason. The company said a winter deal is still in the works.
Additional revenue is important because the inaugural season for service between Portland, Maine, and Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, was a disappointment with only 59,000 passengers, far short of the goal of 100,000 passengers.
The Portland Press Herald reports that the ferry’s operator already spent $21 million that the Canadian government promised over seven years, and that another $5 million was allocated so the company can pay its bills.
