BIDDEFORD — Gaetane L. Poirier, 64, of Biddeford, died Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2014 at Southridge Nursing Home in Biddeford.

She was born in St. Zacharie, Quebec, Canada on Sept. 26, 1950, to Louis Poirier and Antoinette Paquet Poirier Poulin.

She was educated in Canada and moved to Maine to begin working at the age of 18.

She spent many years working in the area mills. She later purchased a home in Van Buren, where she cared for handicapped and disabled adults for the remainder of her working career.

She returned to Biddeford years later to begin treatment for cancer, and eventually moved back permanently after becoming disabled.

Gaetane was preceded in death by: both parents; a sister, Nicole Poirier; and two brothers, Jacques Poirier and Alain Poulin.

She is survived by: two brothers, Roger Poirier of Biddeford and Gilles Poirier and his wife Priscilla of Saco; three sisters, Louise P. Lebel and her husband Gervais of St. Zacharie, Quebec, Canada, Aline Gerard and Noelline Bissonnette and her husband Bryan, all of Biddeford; and six nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be 10-11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 22, 2014 at Hope Memorial Chapel, 480 Elm St., Biddeford, ME 04005. A funeral service will be at 11:30 a.m. at Hope Memorial Chapel. Burial will be at a later date in St. Zacharie, Quebec, Canada. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Gaetane’s name be made to Southridge Rehab & Living Center, 10 May St., Biddeford, ME 04005. Arrangements are by Hope Memorial Chapel.
