BATH — Grace Bennett Fortier, 93, died Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2014, at Brentwood Rehab and Nursing Center in Yarmouth.

She was born in Lubec on May 2, 1921, the daughter of Daniel S. and Nellie (Ward) Bennett. The family moved to Bath in 1927.

She attended Lubec and Bath schools, graduating from Morse High School in the class of 1939. She also attended Portland Northeastern Business School and was a student at University of Maine in Brunswick after her retirement.

She married Francis A. Fortier in 1949. For 43 summers Grace and her family enjoyed living at their cottage on Damariscotta Lake. Mrs. Fortier was employed at Bath Iron Works drafting room for six years as a clerkstenographer and later employed as a federal employee at the Brunswick Naval Air Station, serving in the supply and Public Works Department. Grace was also an aide at the Mitchell School in Bath.

She was active in Bath Cub Scouts and was on the Board Committee as it pertained to Mental Health for the Elderly in Bath.

She was a member of NARFE, the Association for Retired Federal Employees, serving at one time as their secretary. She was also a nine-year charter member of the Bath Extension Club of University of Maine.

She loved to travel inside and outside of the United States most recently on her last trip to Great Britain; it was a pleasure to present a Bath, Maine official plate to the Lord Mayor of Bath’s Sister City, Bath, England. She enjoyed reading in general, especially history. She also completed a book on her family genealogy. Grace particularly enjoyed the camaraderie of her 1939 classmates, a monthly reunion club called the 39ers. She was predeceased by her husband, in 1984, four sisters, Mrs. Alton Carver, Mrs. Vernard Flemming, Mrs. Roland D. McIntosh and Mrs. Lawrence Babb, two brothers, Clyde Bennett and Ralph H. Bennett.

She is survived by her son, Alan F. Fortier and his wife Karen of Bath, five grandchildren, Jennifer Fortier of Phippsburg, Marty Toto of Georgetown, Emily Toto, Maryanne Robertson and Thomas Toto, all of New York, three great-granddaughters, Zoey Nutter, Jasmyne Cary and Rylee Toto, one sister, Mrs. Paul Berry and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 22, 2014, at Daigle Funeral Home, 819 High St., Bath. Burial will be at Oak Grove Cemetery in Bath.
