Clay Hill Farm Presents “A Christmas Carol: The NEW! The Thornton Academy Players present “Pride and Prejudice” from Thursday, Dec. 4 through Saturday, Dec. 6 at Garland Auditorium. All three shows begin at 7 p.m. This is Jon Jory’s modern stage adaptation of Jane Austen’s 1813 classic novel with a cast of nearly forty TA Players. Maine State Ballet’s production of “The Nutcracker” will be performed at Portland’s Merrill Auditorium Saturday, Nov. 29 through Sunday, Dec. 7. The holiday tradition will feature live music from the Maine State Ballet Orchestra, costumes and stage scenery by Gail Csoboth and over 300 dancers. Pecha Kucha Night will be held on Thursday, Nov. 20 at 7:20 p.m. at River Tree Arts, 35 Western Ave. in Lower Village Kennebunk. The event is a series of short, creative presentations by local residents and others. Presenters include a landscape architect, a loon whisperer, two local painters and a master ice carver. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and cost is $5 at the door.
Oil painter Karen Gosselin-Diebolt will be showing her “Nature at Its Best” exhibit at the Wells Library for the month of December. A free reception will take place on Saturday, Dec. 6 at 11 a.m. at the library, located at 1434 Post Road. Refreshments will be provided, and the artist will answer questions. Artist Maurice Auger’s paintings will be on exhibit at the Goodall Library from October through the end of December. The series titled “Windows” covers a span of 10 years as a result of his interest in old wood architecture. Auger is a member of the Sanford Springvale Art Association and his paintings have been exhibited at Maine College of Art in Portland, The Engine Gallery in Biddeford as well as in businesses and several private homes.
“Art is Community V” juried art show and sale will be on display through Dec. 13, with a reception with the artists on Friday, Nov. 21 from 5-8 p.m. at the Saco River Theatre’s Old White Church. Sponsored by the Saco River Art League, this annual show of regional art and fine craft includes paintings, sculptures and child-friendly interactive art-making for visitors during the opening weekend. “Piano Men: The Music of Billy Joel and Elton John,” will be at the Merrill Auditorium on Saturday, Nov. 22 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 23 at 2:30 p.m. Maine residents, Joe Boucher and Chris Eastburn, will join Maestro Robert Moody and the PSO to perform the hits of the ultimate piano men. The concert is focused largely on Elton and Billy’s recordings during the 70s, when their albums were heavy with orchestral inspiration. Caroline Cotter will perform in concert with special guest Julie Dougherty on Nov. 22 at 7 p.m. at the First Parish Federated Church, 150 Main St. in South Berwick. Cotter was the winner of the 2012 Maine Songwriters Association Songwriting Contest and is recognized as a rising star in the Portland music scene. She was also selected for a “Quad-centric” showcase at the Northeast Regional Folk Alliance Conference in 2012 and has toured throughout the U.S., Canada and Europe. Shape Note Singing will take place on Sunday, Nov. 23 from 2-5 p.m. at St. Andrews Church, 11 Glidden St. in Newcastle. The event is a free and participatory, not a performance. The Choral Art Society will begin the holiday season with its 27th annual Christmas at the Cathedral concert series. Performances take place on Saturday, Dec. 6 at noon and at 8 p.m. and on Sunday, Dec. 7 at 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. All concerts will be held at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Portland. The performances will include the premiere of “The Bells I Heard,” winner of CAS’s inaugural New England Carol Contest. Tickets purchased in advance range in price from $22 to $35. A hook organ candlelight concert will be held on Sunday, Dec. 7 at 4 p.m. at the First Congregational Church, 141 North St. in Kennebunk, as part of Kennebunkport’s Christmas Prelude activities. The program features the church’s 1854 hook organ played by professionally trained Nelda Clelland. Clelland will play a variety of seasonal music on the organ and the piano.
