BANGOR — Basil H. Newton, 72, died Nov. 30, 2014, in Bangor, ME. He was born April 14, 1942, to Basil G. and Yvette (Schink) Newton in Brunswick.

Basil graduated from Brunswick High School in 1960 and attended Bowdoin College. His career in the grocery business spanned nearly 60 years, starting at the age of ten working at Livernois IGA. Basil later co-owned the store before becoming the store manager at Midtown IGA in Lisbon Falls in 1973. In 1979, Basil moved to Bangor and became a retail grocery consultant for Milliken- Tomlinson Co., which later became Wetterau Inc. and eventually SuperValu Inc. His career concluded doing similar work for Associated Grocers of Maine.

Basil is survived by his wife, Vivian A. (Cote) Newton of Bangor. Basil and Vivian were married in 1979 and recently celebrated their 35th anniversary. Basil is also survived by his two sons, Bill and James, both of Boston; one brother, Ralph Newton and his wife, Sharon, of Topsham and one sister, Joanne Melville and her husband, Arthur, of Bath; three nieces, Karen Newton of Portland, Kristen Cahill, and Catherine Morton, both of Woolwich. Basil was predeceased by his first wife, Joyce (Dunn) Newton, in 1978.

Family and friends may visit from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 5, 2014, at Kiley & Foley Funeral Service, 299 Union St., Bangor. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2014, at St. Paul the Apostle Parish, St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 768 Ohio St., Bangor, with a time of fellowship and refreshments to follow. Burial will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Biddeford. For those who wish, memorial contributions may be made in Basil’s name to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society of Maine, 74 Gray Road, Falmouth, ME 04105.
