BRUNSWICK – Rachel Kennedy scored a goal in each period of Saturday’s women’s hockey game against Saint Anselm as the Polar Bears extended their unbeaten streak in a 4-1 win at Sidney J. Watson Arena.

The six-game unbeaten streak to start the season (4- 0-2) is the best for the Polar Bears since 2002.

On Sunday, Bowdoin suffered its first loss, falling to nationally-ranked Norwich at Watson Arena, 1-0. The Polar Bears (4-1-2) are off until Jan. 2 when they travel to Minnesota to take on St. Thomas.

On Saturday, Kennedy opened the game with her first goal of the season 6:11 into play. Taking a pass from Jamie Ptacek in the Polar Bears’ defensive end, Kennedy carried the length of the ice into Saint Anselm’s end and wristed a shot over the left shoulder of Hannah Synnott for the 1-0 lead.

The Hawks answered midway through the period as Halle Kent passed up to Alison Butler from the behind the net. Butler quickly flipped a shot top shelf to even the game at one apiece.

After playing more than 11 minutes of scoreless hockey to start the second, Kennedy gave her team their second lead of the game, with an assist going to Ariana Bourque, and Julie Dachille added to Bowdoin’s lead with the team’s third of the game three minutes later.

Saint Anselm outshot Bowdoin 8-2 in the third period, but Kennedy netted the only goal of the frame to complete the scoring.

Bowdoin netminder Lan Crofton had 22 saves.

In the loss to Norwich (8-1- 1), the Cadets scored the lone goal with 8:37 remaining in the first period when Kaycie Anderson slipped a rebound past Crofton (28 saves).

Bowdoin matched the Cadets with 10 shots on goal in the final frame, but were unable to even the score. Crofton kept her team in the mix, coming up with a kick save off a shot from Maki Shuchuk on the left side. Bowdoin peppered the Norwich defense with shots in the final two minutes, trying to take advantage of a sixth skater with the goalie pulled, but failed to find the equalizer.

Women’s basketball

Bowdoin dominated the glass and Megan Phelps finished with 16 points and eight rebounds to help the Polar Bears deal Colby its first loss of the year in a 56- 48 non-conference victory Saturday.

Bowdoin moved to 6-2, while the Mules dropped to 7-1.

Colby forced 24 Polar Bear turnovers, but Bowdoin had a huge 43-24 margin in rebounding. The Polar Bears had five players with five rebounds or more, while the Mules had none.

Phelps was 8-for-12 from the field, using a variety of inside moves and hard drives to the basket. Sara Binkhorst added 15 points on 5-for-10 shooting, while Siena Mitman and Kate Kerrigan both had seven points. Kerrigan had four offensive rebounds and tied Phelps for game-high with eight.

Carylanne Wolfington led Colby with 15 points.

Colby took its only lead of the game at 21-19 after going on a 9-0 run late in the opening half. The Polar Bears went ahead 26-23 before the break as Marle Curle drained a 3-point shot with 28 seconds to go.

The Mules came out sluggish in the second half and Bowdoin cashed in. With Bowdoin up 27-25, the Polar Bears used an 8-0 run to make it a 10-point game at 35-25 with 15:25 to play. Bowdoin led by as many as 16 points in the period before a late Colby 8-0 run closed the final margin to eight points.

The Polar Bears will close out their first semester on Wednesday when they travel to UMaine-Farmington at 7 p.m.

Men’s basketball

Colby defeated Bowdoin for the first time since January 2010, rolling to a 61-48 victory at Morrell Gymnasium on Saturday.

The Mules snap an eightgame losing streak to Bowdoin and improved to 6-3. The Polar Bears have lost three in a row and dropped to 4-3 with the setback.

Ryan Jann led three Colby players in double figures with 14 points, while Chris Hudnut added 10 points and 10 rebounds. Luke Westman pitched in 10 points, four assists and four steals for the Mules.

Bowdoin also had a trio in double digits, led by 12 points and 12 rebounds from John Swords. Lucas Hausman also had a dozen points, while Keegan Pieri posted 11 points and seven boards.

A back-and-forth first half saw the Polar Bears claim a 26-25 lead as former Brunswick High School standout Blake Gordon buried a free throw with no time on the clock.

Swords scored four straight points to open the second half as Bowdoin extended its lead to 30-25 with under 17 minutes to play.

Connor O’Neil answered with five straight points for the Mules, sparking a 10-1 surge that gave Colby the lead for good, 35-31, with 13:30 to go. Bowdoin closed to within a single point following a Swords jumper, 38- 37, with 10:30 left, but the Mules quickly replied with a 3-pointer from John Gallego, keying a decisive 16-3 run that extended Colby’s lead to 54-40 with three minutes remaining.

The Mules hit 11 of 13 free throws down the stretch to seal the victory and held Bowdoin to just 2-for-15 from 3-point range.

Bowdoin will close out its first semester on Tuesday at home against Maine Maritime Academy at 7 p.m.

Men’s hockey

An overtime goal by Tufts lifted the Jumbos to a 4-3 NESCAC win over Bowdoin on Saturday afternoon.

Brian Brown had a goal and two assists in the win. The Jumbos improved to 4-4- 1 overall and 2-3-1 NESCAC while winning for the fourth time in their last five games.

Bowdoin finished a winless weekend to drop to 6-2-1 overall, 3-2-1 in the NESCAC.

Sophomore Matt Pugh continued his productive start to 2014-15 when Brown set him up with an open-net goal at 11:33 of the first to give Tufts a 1-0 advantage.

In the second, Bowdoin capitalized on a Tufts turnover in its own end with Matthew Lison taking the puck in and scoring unassisted at 4:15 to even the game at 1-1.

The Polar Bears added a power-play goal by Ryan Collier at 7:59 to take the 2-1 lead. Bowdoin killed three Tufts penalties and goalie Peter Cronin stopped all 10 shots he faced in the middle stanza.

The third period and overtime saw dramatic momentum swings. The Jumbos netted back-to-back goals by Steward Bell and Brian Ouellette 5:25 apart early in the third to put Tufts up 3-2.

Bowdoin’s Jay Kourkoulis scored at 13:30 of the third to tie the score at 3-3.

Matthew Melanson was robbed on the doorstep by Tufts freshman goalie Ryan McConnell with 1:41 remaining in the third and the game went to overtime.

The Jumbos dominated the extra session, putting five shots on goal. Brown ended it with his sixth goal of the season, giving Tufts the win.

Cronin made 35 saves in the Bowdoin net as the Jumbos outshot the Polar Bears, 39-35. McConnell finished with 32 saves.

On Friday, Connecticut College used a pair of firstperiod goals to down Bowdoin, 3-1.

The majority of the game’s scoring came in the opening period, with Bowdoin taking a 1-0 lead on a Mitch Barrington goal at 7:29.

Connecticut answered with a pair of goals as Joe Birmingham and Zach Shapiro gave the Camels the lead before the end of the frame.

After a scoreless second period, the Camels sealed the win with an empty-netter in the final minute.

Max Fenkell made 20 saves for the Polar Bears, while Tom Conlin stopped 18 shots for the Camels. Connecticut College went 1-for-6 on the power play, while Bowdoin went 0-for-2.

The Polar Bears conclude the first semester on Tuesday at home against the University of Southern Maine at 7 p.m.

Indoor track

The Polar Bear men and women opened their 2014-15 campaign at the Southern Maine Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

In the women’s meet, Brenna Fischer led the Bowdoin performances on the track by winning the 3,000 meter run (11:04.61). In the field events, Erin Silva claimed the pole vault (11- 06.25), Heather Chan won the long jump (15-10.50) and Katharine Krupp took first in the triple jump (36-10.50). Bowdoin’s4x800relayteam of Allyson Fulton, Raleigh McElvery, Alana Menendez, Meghan Bellerose also placed first in a time of 10:58.47.

On the men’s side, Conor Donahue won the 1,000 meter run (2:36.68), Matt Jacobson took the two-mile run (9:41.48) and Nathaniel Kent claimed the 55-hurdles (8.31). Cam Woodford took first place in the shot put for Bowdoin with a toss of 44- 08.75 and was also the top collegiate finisher in the weight throw with a distance of 47-02.50.

Bowdoin will return to action on Jan. 10 when it hosts Connecticut College in a dual meet at Farley Field House beginning at noon.
