Last year, Catholic Charities PATH program, in conjunction with New Beginnings, Preble Street, Tri-County Mental Health Services, Americorp/Vista, and the Lewiston/Auburn Maine Military and Community Network assisted in a statewide effort to count the number of people experiencing homelessness in Maine.
This year, organizers want to increase efforts and they are seeking the public’s help.
Here are some of the ways to help:
Ӣ Volunteers can count homeless people in their community. To sign up, contact Jerry Dewitt at 576-0376 or [email protected]
Ӣ Place fliers about the survey, which include a call-in phone number, in the bags and boxes of food that will be provided to homeless people in the community.
For more information, contact Janice Lara-Hewey at [email protected] or 272-9210.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
