WELLS — On Sunday, at 3 a.m., a fire was reported at the Wells transfer station.
Wells Fire Capt. Jeffrey Cullen said the fire was reported by a police officer who reported seeing flames behind the gate of the Willie Hill Road facility.
When the officer gained access to the facility, said Cullen, he found that there was a fully involved fire of the main building at the transfer station.
Because there were no hydrants at the transfer station, water had to be shuttled to the area, he said.
The three-alarm fire caused extensive damage, said Cullen.
While it only took about one hour to get the fire under control, he said, firefighters stayed on the scene for several hours because they had trouble getting access to some of the areas at the facility.
There were no injuries.
Prior to the there arrival, police received noise complaints.
“What those were I don’t know,” said Cullen.
In addition to Wells, other fire departments that responded to the fire included Ogunquit, Kennebunk, Kennebunkport, Berwick, Sanford, North Berwick, and York Beach. South Berwick Fire Department covered the Wells Fire Station.
