SACO — Thornton Academy rallied back from a halftime deficit thanks to an offensive outburst in the third quarter and a defensive stand that lasted the final two quarters in a 50-33 home victory over South Portland in an SMAA girls basketball game at Linnell Gymnasium on Tuesday.
Maddie Hasson helped stake the Red Riots (3-1) to an 11-10 lead after one quarter as she poured in seven of her team-high 15 points.
Holly Black helped stretch the SP lead to 21-16 at half with six of her eight points.
Offense was hard to come by for the Red Riots after the break, however, as the Thornton (4-0) defense held South Portland to just 12 points and three field goals in the second half.
The Trojans offense exploded for 22 points in the third quarter to turn a five-point deficit into an 11-point lead heading into the fourth.
Victoria Lux scored a game-high 16 points for the Trojans, including 10 in the second half, and Katie McCrum added 11. Thornton had nine different scorers in the game.
Boys Basketball
WESTBROOK 70, BIDDEFORD 31
BIDDEFORD — Alex Millett scored a team-high 15 points, but it wasn’t enough for Biddeford as the Tigers were rolled by visiting Westbrook, 70-31, in an SMAA boys basketball game at Tiger Gymnasium on Tuesday.
Austin Dutremble chipped in with five points for Biddeford (1-3). Westbrook improves to 2-2 with the win.
