AUGUSTA

Police say a Maine man was arrested after a Maine State Museum employee thwarted his attempted to grab a 2-year-old girl and leave the building.

Fifty-eight-year-old James Cavallaro of Bath was charged Tuesday with assault and violating his conditions of release. Police say a receptionist saw Cavallaro grab the girl and intervened, causing Cavallaro to release the girl. The girl was with her grandmother, who had turned her back to hang up coats.

Police say they arrested Cavallaro in the Augusta museum’s parking lot without resistance. He was out on bail on an unrelated charge.

A phone number for Cavallaro was disconnected. It is unclear if he has an attorney. Police say he is now at the Kennebec County Jail.
