FREEPORT — James Lloyd Starkey, 59, of Freeport, died unexpectedly on Dec. 12.

Starkey was born Dec. 27, 1955, and grew up in Falmouth, graduating from Falmouth High School in 1975. He attended Sunday school and worship services at the West Falmouth Baptist Church.

His profession as a certified emergency medical technician allowed him to combine his love for helping others with his zest for life. He worked for years as a member of a Portland ambulance team dedicated to emergency neonatal care, and eventually became a supervisor in the organization.

Starkey also loved outdoor adventures, and volunteered with mountain and water rescue teams, ski patrols, and programs that taught skiing to special-needs children.

After serving in the U.S. Air Force, Starkey obtained his private pilot’s license and continued his passion for flying. Hang-gliding and ultra-light planes soon became a subject of every conversation. He spent many hours soaring over the skies of southern Maine and then sharing stories about his flights. He was also active in the Civil Air Patrol.

Despite his life of adventure, Starkey found the most joy simply by being with family, especially his children. He was a devoted father, grandfather, uncle, big brother and son who will be deeply missed.

He was predeceased by his mother, June Starkey.

He is survived by his father, Walter; stepmother, Claudia; sons, Joshua and Shawn; daughter, Ashly, son, Devin, and their mother, Jennifer; grandchildren, Mason, Madison and Bailey; brother, Thomas and his wife, Colleen; sister, Belinda and her husband, William; brother, Walter Jr. and his wife, Arika; brother, Scott; and many nieces and nephews.

A family memorial service will be held in the spring.
