CLAREMONT, Calif. — Steve Simonds scored a game-high 24 points and St. Joseph’s led from the start and beat Pomona-Pitzer 58-53 Tuesday night in men’s basketball.

The Monks (4-3) led by as many as 18 points in the first half.

The Monks scored the first 11 points and led 23-5 before the Sagehens (2-7) came back to cut the deficit to 27-21 at halftime.

Pomona-Pitzer tied the game at 43 with 9:09 left, but the Monks responded with five straight points on a jumper by Zach Blodgett and a 3-pointer by Simonds.

BIRMINGHAM-SOUTHERN 76, BATES 72: John Crain, Alex Avery and Larry Thomas led a balanced attack with 14 points apiece for the Panthers (7-4) as they led from start to finish and held off a late charge by the Bobcats (7-2) during the final day of the Emory Holiday Classic in Atlanta.

Bates was led by Mike Boornazian’s 25 points.

YORK 66, SOUTHERN MAINE 51: The Huskies (3-7) struggled offensively, shooting only 32.8 percent from the field as they fell to the Spartans (3-7) at the Catholic University Holiday Tournament at Washington, D.C.

Zach Leal led the way for Southern Maine with 11 points and five steals, Mitch Loeman added 10 points with Sean Caddigan adding nine.

WOMEN

BOWDOIN 90, CLARK 29: Sara Binkhorst scored a game-high 17 points in just 18 minutes and Shannon Brady added 12 points and five rebounds and the Polar Bears (8-2) never trailed in a win over the Cougars (3-6) in their opening game of the Coastal Maine Classic at Brunswick.

MIT 84, BATES 71: Sabrina Drammis finished with 28 points and 12 rebounds as the Engineers (5-5) used an 11-2 run early in the second half to pull away from the Bobcats (6-4) in the opening game of the Coastal Maine Classic at Bowdoin.

Molly Brown led Bates with 19 points.

RPI 54, SOUTHERN MAINE 52: Ashley Clough scored 21 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to lift the Engineers (4-5) to a win over the Huskies (6-5) in the consolation game of the Westfield State Holiday Tournament at Westfield, Massachusetts.

The Huskies closed out the first half with an 11-0 run to go into halftime with a 22-21 lead and led by as many as six points twice in the second half.

RPI regained the lead with a 9-0 run late in the second half and took the lead for good, 49-47, on a layup by Courtney Reynolds with 1:33 left in the game.

Ella Ramonas led USM with 13 points, seven rebounds and four assists.

ST. JOSEPH’S 66, POMONA-PITZER 60: Sarah Assante led all scorers with 23 points and five assists in 29 minutes as the Lady Monks (7-2) defeated the Sagehens (1-7) at Claremont, California.

Emily Kehoe had 11 points for the Lady Monks and Norma Waggett added 10 points.
