He graduated from Deerfield Academy, Bowdoin College, 1956, and the Episcopal Theological Seminary, Cambridge, Mass. He was ordained an Episcopal priest at St. Stephens Church, Lynn, Mass. On Aug. 24, 1957, he married Carol Brickett of Wellesley Hills, Mass.
During his career, he served churches in Lynn, Mass.; Oakes and Guelph, N.D.; Marshfield Hills, Mass.; White Earth Indian Reservation, Minn.; and Westford, Mass. A major part of Bill’s ministry was working with youth, primarily by developing a program that allowed him to take young people on camping trips all over the country.
Bill enjoyed outdoor activities of all kinds, especially fishing and camping. Bill was a proud member of Bowdoin’s Meddiebempsters, and an avid Bowdoin hockey fan.
Surviving is his wife Carol, son Reverend Bruce Freeman and wife Dana of Cincinnati, Ohio, daughter Meredith and husband Scott Caple of South Berwick, Maine, daughter Jane Freeman and husband John Lynch of Markleeville, Calif. Also surviving are his sister Priscilla Freeman of Marblehead, Mass., and brother Perrin Newell Freeman Jr. of Cortez, Fla., along with five grandchildren: Audrey Freeman, Aaron Caple, Nathaniel Freeman, Alden Caple and Carl Freeman.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 3 at 11 a.m. at Grace Episcopal Church, 1100 Washington St., Bath. Burial in the church memorial garden will take place in the spring.
