SEATTLE — The Federal Aviation Administration proposed fining Amazon.com $91,000 on Wednesday for shipping an item in violation of hazardous materials regulations.

The agency alleges that Amazon shipped an 8-ounce plastic container of GE Caulk Smoother last summer, and that workers at a UPS sorting facility in Kentucky discovered that about four ounces of flammable alcohol had leaked through the container. In a press release, the agency said, “Amazon failed to provide emergency response information and used a box that was not adequate for shipping.”

Amazon, which didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment, has 30 days to respond to the FAA.
