Two Jonesport residents were killed early Saturday morning in a single-car crash on Main Street. Their vehicle was going more than twice the 25-mph speed limit, according to the Maine State Police.

James Hatt, 26, and Bridget Robinson, 31, were pronounced dead at the scene after the 1997 Cadillac they were riding in flipped and hit a guard rail and a tree. The accident occurred a few minutes after midnight, police said.

Neither of them was wearing a seat belt, said Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

A state trooper had been following the Cadillac but was not in pursuit when the crash occurred, said McCausland.

State police are trying to determine who was driving the vehicle and who owned it.

The crash shut down Main Street for six hours.
