WELLS — Firefighters from seven departments battled a stubborn blaze that consumed a two-story, two-bay detached garage on Horace Mills Road overnight.

Firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading to a nearby home. There were no injuries.

Firefighters were on scene for about five hours, estimated Capt. Jeff Nawfel. He said the blaze was initially called in by the homeowners as a fire in a chicken coop that was attached to the garage. When firefighters arrived at the scene, in a rural location near the Sanford-North Berwick town line, fire was shooting through the rear of the garage and about 50 percent of it was ablaze, he said.

Initially, there were manpower and water issues, said Nawfel, and because of the rural location, firefighters had to establish a water shuttle.

The garage was a total loss. Firefighters used a bucket loader to bring down the remaining exterior walls to extinguish hot spots, he said.
