BIDDEFORD — C.J. Autry drilled a 3-pointer with 1:02 left to break up a tie game as the University of New England scored the final seven points of the night for a 65-59 Commonwealth Coast Conference men’s basketball victory over Gordon College on Thursday at the Harold Alfond Forum.

Winning for the fourth time in six contests, the Nor’easters now stand at 5-9 overall, 3-4 in league outings. The Fighting Scots, who had won the last three meetings between the teams, settle back to 6-8 on the year (3-4 CCC).

After Gordon’s Hans Miersma hit a baseline jumper with 2:04 left to put the visitors up one (59-58), UNE’s Drew Coveney made the second of two free throws on the ensuing possession to lock things up for a seventh time in the game.

UNE got the ball back when the Fighting Scots missed the front end of a 1-and-1, and Coveney, who corralled the defensive board, tracked down an offensive rebound moments later and found Autry in the right corner for the go-ahead hoop.

An errant shot by Gordon on the other end, coupled with another Coveney free throw with 26 seconds left, made it 63-59. The Nor’easters sealed it with six seconds on the clock as Matt Lettick was fouled making a steal and stepped to the charity stripe to knock down a pair.

Coveney gathered most of his stats in the second half, finishing with 11 points, six assists, five rebounds and five steals. Autry contributed eight of his 10 points in the closing stanza.

UNE women drop Gordon, 88-35

BIDDEFORD — Alicia Brown scored a career-high 19 points as four University of New England players reached double digits in an 88-35 win over Gordon College in Commonwealth Coast Conference women’s basketball action Thursday evening at the Harold Alfond Forum.

Winners of five straight games and 9 of their last 10, the Nor’easters improve to 10-2 overall and a perfect 7-0 in CCC play to sit atop the conference standings. Gordon drops to 2-12 overall and is winless in seven conference outings. UNE has taken the last 15 meetings with the Fighting Scots and has won 38 straight CCC regular-season contests on its home court.

Brown’s 19 points came on 9-for-13 shooting from the floor, and in just 24 minutes of playing time. Alanna Vose supported with 14 points, while Sadie DiPierro and Lauren Hayden added 12 and 11, respectively. Meghan Gribbin had a team-high nine assists.
