BIDDEFORD — The University of New England opened up a 35-11 lead in the latter stages of the first half on the way to a 74-44 non-conference women’s basketball victory over Saint Joseph’s College Monday evening at the Harold Alfond Forum.
The Nor’easters (14-3) have now topped the Monks (11-5) in each of the last 11 meetings between the teams.
Five players reached double figures for UNE, led by Alanna Vose with 14 points ”“ 11 of which came during the initial period. Kelly Coleman and Meghan Gribbin added 11 points apiece, while Alicia Brown and Sam MacDonald both tallied 10.
UNE limited St. Joe’s to just 19 percent shooting in the contest and forced 26 visitor turnovers. The strong defensive effort was aided by Brooke Flaherty with four blocks. Flaherty and Sadie DiPierro shared the team lead with three steals.
For the Monks, Sarah Assante, Emily Kehoe and Emily Quirion all totaled eight points.
