OLD ORCHARD BEACH — A fire at a School Street apartment building has displaced 24 mostly older residents, authorities say.
Two people were also injured in the blaze, which authorities say was caused by a cooking accident, according to the Associated Press.
The blaze at Centennial Plaza apartments, located at 6 School St., was reported at about 1 a.m. Thursday.
Investigators say it began in the kitchen of a first-floor unit, and spread to the hallway and the second floor, according to the AP. The third floor suffered smoke damage.
When firefighting crews arrived, some residents were hanging out of windows and had to jump to safety, according to the AP.
One resident was taken to the hospital with an ankle injury, while another suffered from smoke inhalation, according to the AP.
Centennial Plaza, according to information from the Maine State Housing Authority’s website, is run by Alpha Management and provides income-based rentals to elderly people ages 62 and older and those with disabilities.
The American Red Cross is assisting those displaced by the fire, said Red Cross spokesman John Lamb in an email.
“The Red Cross will meet with the victims and provide emergency shelter, food, clothing, and emotional support as needed,” he said.
