PHIPPSBURG — The Nature Conservancy will be leading a 6-mile snowshoe/hike from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13, at the Basin Preserve in Phippsburg. The 1,840-acre, forested coastal preserve is Conservancy’s largest in Maine.
This event is part of the Great Maine Outdoor Weekend — a statewide initiative to connect Mainers to the outdoors. Participants will snowshoe through mixed hardwood forests and rare pitch pine woodlands, while traversing low granite ridges and skirting frozen wetlands and bogs. Participants will also pass through the Sprague Pond Preserve, owned and managed by Phippsburg Land Trust.
The snowshoe is moderately strenuous and limited to 20 individuals. Participants should bring their own snowshoes and be prepared for physical activity in changing winter conditions.
The free event will take place even if there isn’t any snow. Those taking part are asked not to bring their dogs.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
