MANCHESTER, N.H. — David Van der Gulik scored two goals Friday night to lead the Manchester Monarchs to a 3-1 win over the Portland Pirates at Verizon Wireless Arena.

Van der Gulik opened the scoring 4:24 into the first period, then got his ninth of the season with 7:10 remaining while Manchester was short-handed.

Portland’s Darian Dziurzynski tallied his ninth goal of the season, with assists from Alexandre Bolduc and Henrik Samuelsson, at 9:29 of the first.

Kevin Raine broke the tie 9:25 into the second period.

Jean-Francois Berube stopped 26 shots for the Monarchs, who are 5-2 this season against Portland. Louis Domingue made 22 saves for the Pirates, who had won two straight.

The Pirates outshot Manchester 27-25 but were held to five shots in the third period.
