SACO — Dr. Irene J. Vlahakos, 83, of Saco, passed away early Sunday morning on Feb. 1, 2015, at The Monarch Center in Saco.

She was born in Saco on Oct. 9, 1931, a daughter of James and Pota (Pappas-piridakos) Vlahakos.

Irene graduated from Thornton Academy, class of 1949. She received her Bachelor of Art degree from University of New Hampshire, where she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She also received a Masters Degree from Kansas State University and a PhD from University of Connecticut.

She had a long and distinguished career as a professor of Psychology at Central Connecticut State University.

Irene was a member of St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Saco. She was a member of St. Fotini Ladies Society, Sorority of Lacones and Daughters of Penelope.

She is preceded in death by: one brother, Nicholas J. Vlahakos; and by two sisters, Dorothea J. Vlahakos and Viola J. Vlahakos.

She is survived by: one sister, Helen J. Vlahakos; and cousins, nieces and nephews.

Visiting Hours will be from 4-7 p.m. with the Trisagion Prayer Service at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 3, at Cote Funeral Home, 87 James Street, Saco.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Saco. Burial will follow in St. Demetrios Cemetery in Biddeford.
