GORHAM — Christian Rossetti scored in the second period to provide the offense and Colby Drost recorded 25 saves as the University of New England blanked the University of Southern Maine 1-0 in an ECAC Men’s East ice hockey game played Tuesday evening at the USM Ice Arena.

The win was the fourth in the last six outings for the Nor’easters, who improved to 8-11-1 overall and 6-7-1 in league play. The Huskies dropped to 5-15-0, 2-11-0 in ECAC East action. The shutout was the second of the season for UNE versus Southern Maine, with the Nor’easters taking an 8-0 decision at home on Nov. 21.

Rossetti notched the lone marker of the contest at 15:51 of the middle period when he collected a USM turnover near the blue line and skated in to beat Husky goaltender Kyle Shapiro.

Drost had played a strong first period between the pipes for UNE, keeping Southern Maine off the scoreboard despite the Nor’easters being outshot by a 12-7 margin. He was also solid in the final two minutes of the game after the Huskies  pulled Shapiro for an extra skater. Drost stopped a blast through a screen by Stephen Gallo with less than 20 seconds remaining to help preserve his third shutout of the season, with two of those coming against USM.

The Nor’easters displayed impressive discipline, staying out of the penalty box the entire evening to help play a key role in the victory.

Shapiro finished with 23 stops for USM, which held a 25-24 advantage in shots on goal.

Women’s Basketball

UNE 60, WENTWORTH 42

BIDDEFORD — The University of New England women’s basketball team outscored Wentworth Institute of Technology 22-9 over the final 8:40 to pull away for a 60-42 Commonwealth Coast Conference victory Tuesday evening at the Harold Alfond Forum.

With the win, the Nor’easters (16-4, 12-1 CCC) remain atop the CCC standings while picking up their 41st consecutive regular-season home victory versus conference opponents. Wentworth dips to 5-15 overall and 3-10 in league play. UNE has won the last 13 meetings between the two teams and is 25-2 in the all-time series.

Kelly Coleman led all scorers with 17 points to pace the Nor’easters. She was 7-of-12 from the floor and grabbed a game-best nine rebounds. Her 17 points moved her up two spots on UNE’s career scoring list, where she now stands seventh with 1,339 points.

Alicia Brown contributed 15 points and seven boards for UNE. She made 7-of-10 shots from the floor. Meghan Gribbin chipped in nine points and eight assists.

For Wentworth, Riselly Deoleo posted team highs with 16 points, eight boards, five steals and four assists. Rachel Camara added eight points and five rebounds.

After Coleman scored the first four points for UNE, the Leopards matched that output for their lone tie of the evening. The Nor’easters went on a 9-1 run to grab a 13-5 lead 5:56 into the contest, but were unable to establish a double-digit margin on their way to a 28-21 lead at intermission. Coleman tallied 11 points in the first half for UNE, which limited Wentworth to 33.3 percent field goal accuracy over the opening 20 minutes.

Lauren Hayden scored five consecutive points out of the locker room to push UNE’s lead to 12 (33-21), but Wentworth then scored 12 of the next 17 points to get within five (38-33) with just under nine minutes remaining.

Baskets down low by Coleman and Brown were sandwiched around 3-pointers from Michaela Flanagan and Gribbin to put the Nor’easters on top by 15 (48-33) and put the game out of reach.

UNE outrebounded the visitors by a 43-32 margin while recording 19 assists on its 25 field goals.

Men’s Basketball

WENTWORTH 61, UNE 49

BIDDEFORD — John-Michael Fragnoli scored a game-high 19 points to lead Wentworth Institute of Technology to a 61-49 Commonwealth Coast Conference men’s basketball victory over the University of New England on Tuesday evening at the Harold Alfond Forum.

The Leopards’ fourth consecutive win puts WIT at 10-10 overall, and now 8-5 in CCC action. UNE falls to 5-15 on the year, 3-10 in league play.

Ray Bessette added 13 points for Wentworth, which shot 41 percent from the floor as a team and overcame 23 turnovers. Jason Ganley tallied nine points and a game-best five rebounds, as the Leopards controlled the boards by a 36-24 margin. Nico Donato contributed eight points and four steals.

The Nor’easters were paced by a season-high 17 points from Drew Coveney, and C.J. Autry chipped in with 12. Gavin Dibble recorded all of his six points and four steals in the second half.

Wentworth came out of halftime holding a 28-25 edge, and UNE pulled within one early in the closing period, but back-to-back treys by Bessette and Cesar Fulcar had the gap up at eight (37-29) at the 14:32 mark.

UNE connected on just 28 percent of its shots during the last 20 minutes, and made only 1-of-9 from deep. The Nor’easters were also hampered by 23 turnovers in the contest.
