AUGUSTA (AP) — More than 64,000 people in Maine have signed up for health insurance on the exchange with just more than a week left before the open enrollment period ends.
Federal officials said Wednesday that 64,069 people have enrolled as of Friday. Nationally, nearly 7.5 million people enrolled as of January 30 in the states where the federal government is running the insurance markets.
The open enrollment period, which began Nov. 15, runs through Feb. 15.
Maine residents have the choice between three companies on the exchange this year with the arrival of Harvard Pilgrim. It joined Maine Community Health Options and Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, which also sold plans on the exchange last year.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
