SAN DIEGO (AP) — In his only his second tournament of the year, Tiger Woods has widthdrawn from the Farmers Insurance Open because of an apparent back injury.
Before putting on the 12th hole — the par-3 third on the North Course at Torrey Pines — Woods had caddie Joe LaCava pick up the ball. He was 2 over through 11 holes Thursday.
Woods has said in his last two events at Isleworth in December and the Phoenix Open last week that his health was good. He had back surgery at the end of March and took four months off at the end of the year.
Woods shot a career-high 82 in the second round of the Phoenix Open and missed the cut by 12 shots.
Woods now has gone 12 straight PGA Tour events without a top 10, dating to his runner-up finish in The Barclays in 2013 when back pain dropped him to his knees. This was his first round since a career-high 82 last week in the Phoenix Open to tie for last with a club pro and miss the cut by 12 shots.
Nicholas Thompson had an 8-under 64 on the North Course and had a one-shot lead over Michael Thompson when play was suspended by darkness. Brooks Koepka, the Phoenix Open winner, had a 66 on the North. The best score on the tougher South Course belonged to Jhonnatan Vegas at 67.
Dustin Johnson, playing for the first time since his sixmonth leave for “personal challenges,” holed out for eagle on No. 4 on the South Course as his lone highlight. He was 2 over with one hole remaining.
