Thanks to a series of unrelenting snowstorms in recent days, Brunswick has already busted its snow removal budget.
Town Manager John Eldridge said Monday that the news didn’t come as a surprise, considering there has been “more snow in a period of two weeks than we sometimes get in a season.”
“I did a preliminary calculation. If it stopped snowing tomorrow, we’d still be overbudget,” Eldridge told the town council Monday. “Like everyone else in the area, our budget got hit pretty hard.”
Eldridge said an exact figure as to the overage has yet to be determined.
There are no plans to make changes in the town’s snow removal operation. There has been enough community feedback to convince the town not to place limits on snow hauling, said Eldridge.
Eldridge praised public works and recreation department employees who have been working many overtime hours in order to plow the roads, clear the sidewalks, and haul away the white stuff.
“It’s sometimes a thankless job. I don’t know how they did it. They’re exhausted,” he said. “The overtime is nice, but some rest would be good, too.”
While council and members of the audience applauded public works employees, a light snow continued to fall outside. Yet again.
