PORTLAND (AP) — A Maine district attorney says she’s considering whether manslaughter would apply in this case of a Portland landlord who owned a building where six people died in November.

The cause of the fire was deemed accidental. City officials forwarded the case to Cumberland County District Attorney Stephanie Anderson because they believed owner Gregory Nisbet operated the property as an illegal rooming house.

Anderson says it could be weeks before she determines whether “criminal charges will be filed, and if so, what the charges will be.” She says manslaughter is one charge that could apply, and it depends whether Nisbet was reckless. Anderson says her office’s investigation is continuing.

Nisbet did not return a reporter’s phone call.
