He was born on Dec. 16, 1933, in East Corinth, Maine, to Oscar Sr. and Alicia (Downs) Brackett, he graduated from Brunswick HS 1952. On June 16, 1956, he married Thelma A. Bradbury of Orrington, Maine. After spending four years in the Air Force they settled in Brunswick and Topsham, Maine, to raise their family. Bill worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 32 years, retiring in 1989. After retiring, Bill and Thelma enjoyed wintering in Dade City, Fla., and summering at their beautiful lakefront properties in Casco, Maine, Gardner, Maine and most recently, Augusta, Maine.
In the summer months, Bill worked for a number of years at Naples Marina in Naples, Maine. In his retirement he was very active, playing softball on a senior league and he especially enjoyed his beloved game of golf. Bill was happiest when he was either on the water with his family, including his granddogs or on the golf course. He and Thelma enjoyed traveling and took several trips to various places in the United States either by automobile or by motorcycle.
Bill is survived by his wife of 58 years, four children: Robin and his wife Sherry of New Bern, NC, Wayne of Augusta, ME, Penney Hughes and her husband Steve of Mansfield, TX, and Sherri and her partner Becky Manry of Bowdoinham, ME. Also surviving him are two brothers: Gordon and his wife Barbara of Prescott, AZ and Henry Downs and his wife Elaine of Hamden; three very special granddaughters: Heather Hall Laframboise and her husband, Josh; Lyndsay Hall Frank and her husband Chris; and Kiley Brackett; four “bonus” grandchildren: Sean Hughes, Andrea Goulet, Michelle Davis and Heather Mittleider; seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial gathering to honor his life will be held at Brackett’s Funeral Home, 29 Federal St., Brunswick, on Monday, Feb. 16 from 6 to 8 p.m. Charitable donations can be sent to Coastal Maine Humane Society, 30 Range Road, Brunswick, ME 04011.
