ALFRED — A Biddeford man pleaded not guilty to manslaughter, reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon and leaving the scene of an accident at York County Superior Court in Alfred Thursday morning.

Biddeford police say that on Nov. 23, Shane R. Jones, 26, ran over his mother, Kimberly Jones, in the driveway of their residence at 6 Brackett St. after an argument over money he owed her. The 49-year-old woman was transported to Southern Maine Health Care, where she later died from her injuries.

“Not-guilty pleas were entered for all three charges,” Jones’ attorney, Rob Ruffner, said in a phone call Thursday.

“The state was not able to provide any discovery,” he added.

In court, the defense is entitled to obtaining information and evidence from the plaintiff, and this process is known as discovery.

If the plaintiff ”“ in this case, the state ”“ does not respond to the defense’s initial request for discovery, the defense can then file a motion for order compelling discovery, which explains to the judge that the plaintiff has not responded to the defense’s request. The judge can then order the plaintiff to do so.

Eventually, if the plaintiff does not provide discovery after repeated requests, the defense can file a motion to dismiss, perhaps winning the case.

Ruffner said that he and Jones were given 60 days to file any motions.

Jones’ bail remains set at $50,000, according to court documents.

Manslaughter is a Class A felony, and if convicted, Jones faces up to 30 years in prison.

York County Superior Court Justice John O’Neil will be presiding over the case, according to court documents. It is unclear when Jones’ next court appearance will be.
