BATH — On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the Long Reach Swim Club from the Bath Area Family YMCA will compete in the annual Maine YMCA State Championships.
LRSC is in search of its 25th consecutive title, and 33rd overall. The club won its first state title in 1968 under coach Richard Petir.
This year’s team is again coached by Jay Morissette, who has led LRSC to unprecedented heights.
The Maine YMCA State Championships will be held at the University of Maine in Orono. The racing begins with the 13-14 and Senior boy divisions. LRSC is favored in the Senior boy division, led by Nate Samson, Jacob Cost, Spencer Lindsley and Tucker Banger.
LRSC will battle it out, with the closest projected competitors expected to be Northern York Y of Biddeford and the Down East Y of Ellsworth. Top LRSC 13-14 boys are Brian Hess, Andrew Samson, Nicco Bartone and Matt Yost.
Saturday morning, the 9- 10 girls start the day. Penobscot Bay Y of Camden and Northern York teams are favored to win the division title, with LRSC hoping to finish in top three. Top LRSC 9-10 girls are Olivia Cunningham, Riley Logan, Lauren Buczkowski and Caily Charboneau.
The 9-10 and 11-12 boys are next. Waldo County Y of Belfast and Down East are expected to challenge for the divisional title and LRSC is hoping for a top-five finish. Top LRSC boys are Andrew Leighton, Bradley Vuong, Aiden Saunders and Oscar Herrara. In the 11-12 boys, LRSC Waterville’s Mid- Maine Dolphins will battle for the top spot. Top 11-12 boys for LRSC are team record holder Robby Hyde, Erik Linseisen, Evan Willertz, Nicolas Holland and Sam Sinibaldi. Former LRSC coach Beth Prelgovisk is the current Waterville coach.
The final divisions of the day are the 13-14 and Senior girls. LRSC is favored to win both divisions with strong teams. Top 13-14 girls are Haily Harper, Olivia Harper, Ella Martin, Alexandra Morse, Leah Totman and Cara Viele. Top Senior girls are Caitlin Tycz, Sonia Lin, Ann Tolan, Lynsie Russell and Emma Blair.
Sunday morning starts with the 8-and-under girls. The Bangor Y and Down East teams are favored to win the top spot, with LRSC looking for a top-five finish. Top girls for this division are Meridith Yacoben, Eliza Marco, Grace Tetreault and Sadia Levy.
Next are the 8-and-under boys. Penobscot Bay and Bangor Y are favored, and LRSC’s goal is to finish in the top three. Top 8-andunder boys are team record holder Anders Linseisen, Keegan Rowe, Aaron Rose and Nicco Herrera.
Rounding out the meet will be the 11-12 girl division. LRSC, Casco Bay Y of Freeport and the Penobscot Bay YMCAs are expected to challenge for top spots.
“It should be an exciting meet,” said Morissette. “Many teams have really stepped up their games and will provide LRSC with all the challenges we can handle. We will have to swim smart and fast to repeat results of the past.”
