AUGUSTA (AP) — Augusta’s snazzy new courthouse is opening after more than two years of construction.
The 120,000-square-foot Capital Judicial Center was scheduled to open today. It houses Augusta District Court, Kennebec County Superior Court and family court, and includes six separate courtrooms.
The building is also home the court’s Office of Information Technology and the Administrative Office of the Courts.
The facility has a more open look, with lots of glass and views of the Kennebec River and downtown.
The Kennebec Journal reports that the new courtrooms are light and airy, feature large wall monitors are fitted with padded seats.
The new building is also more secure.
The total price of the project was $57 million.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
