PORTLAND — Ethan Murphy’s lay-up at the buzzer completed a stunning comeback as the Cape Elizabeth boys rallied in the final minute for a 44-42 victory over Medomak Valley in the State Class B High School Boys Basketball Championship at Cross Insurance Arena on Friday.

Down by seven with 51 seconds remaining, the Capers (20-2) battled back. After the Panthers (19-3) missed on their end, Cape Elizabeth drove the length of the court, with Murphy’s shot just beating the buzzer.

Murphy led Cape Elizabeth with 13 points, with Jack O’Rourke adding 11 and Finn Bowe seven.

The Panthers had a 12-9 lead after a quarter and held a 17-15 edge after a low-scoring and fast-moving first half. The Capers battled back, outscoring Medomak 19-12 in the third quarter for a 34-29 lead.

Nick DePatsy had a gamehigh 14 points for Medomak Valley, while Cameron Allaire added 12.

HAMPDEN 70

PORTLAND 50

The Broncos avenged last year’s State Class A title loss to the Bulldogs in rolling to a win at the Augusta Civic Center on Saturday.

Brendan McIntyre led Hampden Academy (21-1) with 22 points and 12 rebounds, while Nick Gilpin picked up 17 points, nine assists and five rebounds.

Hampden jumped to an 18- 11 lead after a quarter, led 27- 21 at the half and 46-36 through 24 minutes.

Portland had three players in double figures and finished the season 19-3.

CALAIS 57

DIRIGO 43

The Blue Devils outscored the Cougars 33-16 over the second and third quarters to take control and win the State Class C title at the Cross Arena in Bangor on Saturday.

Down 13-10 after a quarter, Calais (20-2), which won its fourth title in 10 years, outscored Dirigo (19-3) 15-7 in the second for a 25-20 halftime lead. An 18-9 advantage in the third upped the advantage to 43-29.

Nathan Newell had 16 points to pace the balanced Blue Devils attack.

Riley Robinson had 20 points, seven rebounds and three assists for Dirigo.

FOREST HILLS 51

Forest Hills completed a perfect 22-0 season by winning its second State Class D title in three years at the Cross Arena on Saturday.

With four senior starters leading the way, the Tigers finished as the only unbeaten boys team in Maine.

Ryan Petrin led with 16 points and 18 rebounds for Forest Hills.

Leading 45-42, Petrin fouled out. But, Tanner Daigle’s lay-up and solid free-throw shooting down the stretch was enough to put the Tigers over the top.

Chris Gilberson led Fort Fairfield, which knocked off the top two seeds in the Eastern D tournament, with 15 points.

Girls

AUGUSTA — Nia Irving and Dominique Lewis handled the workload as the Lawrence Bulldogs captured the State Class A title with a 50-43 win over Thornton Academy on Saturday at the Augusta Civic Center.

Despite battling foul trouble, Irving had 27 points and grabbed seven rebounds in the win. She combined with Lewis for 15 fourth-quarter points.

It was Lawrence’s first girls basketball state title since 1994 when Cindy Blodgett led the Bulldogs (21-1) to the championship. Lewis chipped in 12 points.

Lawrence led 12-9 after a quarter, but the Trojans rebounded to take a 26-20 halftime lead, with Irving picking up her third foul late in the half.

Thornton led 36-33 through three, but Lawrence took over in the fourth for the win.

Alex Hart paced Thornton Academy (21-2) with 14 points.

GREELY 59

PRESQ. ISLE 36

The Western B champion Greely Rangers outscored Eastern B champ Presque Isle 27-5 in the second quarter to take control in Friday’s State Class B Championship at Cross Insurance Arena in Portland.

Leading 6-5 after a quarter, the Rangers hit seven 3- pointers in the second quarter for a 33-10 halftime lead.

Presque Isle (19-3) outscored Greely (20-2), 29-23 in the second half, but the damage was done.

Moira Train led three Greely players in double figures with 14 points, followed by Ashley Storey’s 13 and Isabel Porter’s 12. The Rangers ended up with nine 3-pointers.

Krystal Kingsbury paced Presque Isle with 18 points.

HOULTON 59

MARANACOOK 51

Kolleen Bouchard led the Shiretowners had 18 points as Houlton claimed the State Class C title at Cross Arena on Saturday.

Natalie Hill, Rylee Warman and Katie Condon also scored in double figures for Houlton (20-2).

Christine Miller had a huge game for Maranacook (18-4), scoring a game-high 31 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter. Catherine Sanborn added 10 points for the Black Bears.

Tied 30-30 in the third quarter, Houlton used a 7-0 run to take control.

WASHBURN 60

RANGELEY 54

Mackenzie Worcester scored 37 points to eclipse 2,000 points in her brilliant career as the Beavers won their fifth consecutive State Class D title on Saturday with a win over Rangeley, which finished 20-1.

Worcester came in 36 points away from reaching 2,000. She missed her first couple shots, but found her rhythm and led Washburn (22-0) to the win.

Taylor Esty was superb for the Lakers, scoring 30 points.

But, the Beavers were solid, especially in the second quarter. Tied 9-9, Washburn claimed a 31-25 halftime lead and extended out to a 48-41 advantage through three.

Joan Overman added 10 points for Washburn, while Seve Deery-DeRaps picked up 14 for Rangeley and Blayke Morin chipped in 10.
