Passport day at Town Hall

On Saturday, March 7, 10 a.m.-3 p.m., the town of Scarborough will hold a special passport day event. To learn more about travel requirements for U.S. citizens or to apply for a U.S. passport visit the Community Services office on the second floor at Town Hall. You don’t need to be a Scarborough resident to take part or apply for a passport.

Library set for ‘One Book’ event

The Scarborough Public Library is getting ready to host a special, two-day “One Book, One Community” event that explores Maine’s part in the Civil War.

Along with the Scarborough Historical Society and Scarborough Middle School, the library is participating in the yearlong “Local and Legendary: Maine in the Civil War” project, which is being funded with a grant from the Maine Historical Society and the Maine Humanities Council.

The One Book, One Community event will take place at the library on Saturday and Sunday, March 7 and 8. The book chosen is “Billy Boy: The Sunday Soldier of the 17th Maine” by Jean Flahive. In addition, young people wishing to take part are being encouraged to read “Picture the Dead,” by Adele Griffin and Lisa Brown.

The goal of the event is for the community to read a common book, then gather for book discussions and special presentations related to the Civil War, with a particular focus on Mainers and locals, who took part in the events that ripped the country apart 150 years ago.

The schedule for March 7, which runs from the 9:30 a.m. registration to 4 p.m., includes a keynote address by Flahive along with book discussions facilitated by Adam Tuchinsky and Libby Bischof, who are both associate professors at the University of Southern Maine.

In addition, Saturday’s events include a hands-on look at various artifacts carried by actual Civil War soldiers with re-enactor and historian Mark Matteau. Also, Karen Sherry, curator of American arts and director of collections at the Portland Museum of Art, will talk about Winslow Homer’s role as an artist sketching Civil War battles and other scenes for various magazines, including Harper’s Weekly.

On Sunday, the programs will run from 1-5 p.m. and will include a presentation by Civil War preservationist and historian, Steve Bunker, who will bring artifacts along to illustrate his program, entitled “2nd Maine Cavalry: Horse Soldiers of the Civil War.”

The weekend will culminate with the presentation, “Soldier’s Heart: The Hidden Wounds of the Civil War,” which will be presented by Steve Bentley, an author and advocate for veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.
