GORHAM — University of Southern Maine Director of Athletics Al Bean announced that veteran women’s basketball coach and Associate Director of Athletics Gary Fifield has retired from both his coaching and administrative position within the department. Fifield will finish out the remainder of the 2014-2015 academic year and will retire officially on June 30.
“Gary’s impact on our athletic program has been enormous,” Bean said. “His retirement will leave a great void on both the coaching and administrative areas of our department. Gary’s work ethic, competitive nature, incredible success on the court and his attention to detail as an administrator have served USM extremely well.”
Bean also stated that “another legend is retiring and replacing Gary will truly be an ominous task.”
In 27 seasons as USM’s women’s basketball coach, Fifield compiled an outstanding record of 660-137, while leading the Huskies to the NCAA Division III Final Four five times, including three appearances in the national championship game.
