BRUNSWICK — The Bowdoin College women’s lacrosse team scored eight goals in the second half to storm top-ranked Amherst on Saturday at Ryan Field, 10-6.

The 12th-ranked Polar Bears improved to 3-0 (2-0 NESCAC) and earned their first victory against a national No. 1 team since defeating The College of New Jersey in the semifinals of the 2011 NCAA Tournament. The Jeffs, who rose to the national top-spot last week, fell to 2-1 (1-1 NESCAC).

Isabel Sippel was outstanding in net for the Polar Bears, stopping 11 shots, including nine in the second half when Bowdoin began its decisive run. Lindsay Picard led Bowdoin with three goals, while Emma Beecher had two goals and an assist for the Polar Bears. Kelsey Gallagher also had two goals for Bowdoin, who got three groundballs from Grace DeWald.

Amherst was led by Meghan Mills’ three goals, while Rachel Passarelli had two. Priscilla Tyler collected a game-high five draw controls, while Hanna Krueger had two caused turnovers and two groundballs for the Jeffs. Goaltender Christy Forrest had 10 saves for Amherst.

Both teams struggled to get their offenses on track in the opening period. Passarelli scored with 9:10 remaining in the frame to give the Jeffs a 3-2 advantage at the break.

The teams traded goals to open the second period before the Polar Bears rolled off five straight goals to take command. Beecher scored two early goals in the half for Bowdoin, and Picard found the net three times during the decisive surge as the Polar Bears built an 8-4 lead with under nine minutes to go.

After Krueger trimmed the lead to 8-5 with 8:22 remaining, Bowdoin answered with goals from Clare McLaughlin and Megan O’Connor to squelch all comeback hopes for the Jeffs.

Bowdoin was a perfect 19- for-19 in clears on the afternoon, while Amherst went 13-of-21. The Jeffs had 17 turnovers in the contest and Bowdoin held a 28-20 advantage in shots.

The Polar Bears will return to action at Hamilton this upcoming Saturday.

Men’s lacrosse

Four players recorded multiple goals as the 10thranked Amherst took a 20-4 win over Bowdoin on Saturday afternoon on Gooding Field.

The Jeffs improved to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the conference, while the Polar Bears dropped to 0-2.

Quinn Moroney led the Jeffs with seven points (two goals, five assists), while Kane Haffey finished with four goals and two assists.

Bowdoin was led by David Nemirov with two goals, four groundballs and one caused turnover. Brandon Lee and Brandon Rothman added a score each, and Daniel O’Berry dished out two assists. O’Berry and Billy Valle led the Polar Bears with two caused turnovers apiece.

Amherst scored the first four goals of the game before Nemirov scored consecutive goals to cut it to 4-2 midway through the second period. The Jeffs used a 5-1 run before the half to take a 9-3 lead at intermission.

Amherst put the game out of reach with an 8-0 third quarter surge.

In net, Connor Laughlin stopped 13 shots in 38:02 of play, allowing 14 goals. Peter Mumford stopped 11 and permitted six in 21:58.

The Polar Bears will look to get into the win column on Wednesday when they play at Keene State at 5 p.m.

Men’s tennis

Bowdoin earned a 7-2 triumph over Chapman in its season debut on Sunday evening in California.

The 18th-ranked Polar Bears began their West Coast swing with a victory and will return to action on Tuesday against Carnegie Mellon in Claremont, Calif.

On Sunday, Bowdoin swept doubles action to sprint to an early 3-0 lead. The No. 1 duo of Luke Trinka and Luke Tecek (8-4), No. 2 pairing of Kyle Wolstencroft and Kyle Wolfe (8-6), and No. 3 team of Noah Bragg and Gil Roddy (8-6) took control of the match for the Polar Bears.

Bowdoin took straight-set wins at positions No. 3-6 in singles action to seal the win. Wolfe (7-5, 6-4), Chase Savage (6-4, 6-2), Tercek (6-4, 6-1) and Roddy (7-6, 6-1) accounted for the Polar Bear points in the singles matches.

Indoor track

The Polar Bears posted several outstanding finishes at the ECAC Track Championship this weekend.

Bowdoin featured a pair of winning performances in the competition as Erin Silva and Conor Donahue continued their outstanding winter seasons. Donahue took the 1,000-meter run in a time of 2:28.79, while Silva captured the ECAC crown in the pole vault with a height of 12-10.

Meanwhile, first-year Justin Weathers set a school record in the preliminaries of the 60 hurdles in a time of 8.48 seconds.

Other top performances included the women’s distance medley relay team of Allyson Fulton, Emily Clark, Demi Feder and Sarah Kelley taking fourth in 12:11.65. Katharine Krupp took fifth in triple jump in 37-06.75.
