PORTLAND (AP) — Chancellor James Page is ready to announce the next president of the University of Southern Maine.

The finalists are Glenn Cummings and Harvey Kesselman. Cummings is president of the University of Maine at Augusta. Kesselman serves as provost and executive vice president at the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey.

Zito Sartarelli, dean of the business school at West Virginia University, previously withdrew his name.

The announcement will be made today in Portland.

The current president, David Flanagan, says USM will likely continue to face difficulties.

Flanagan oversaw cuts at the university aimed at closing a $16 million budget gap, including the elimination of 51 faculty positions and five academic programs. He told trustees this week those efforts bought a reprieve of only one year before problems resurface.
